Canada Defeats Sweden 5-1
By Jake Davidson of MMAFlush
Canada has claimed it’s fifth straight World Junior Hockey Championship gold medal after defeating Sweden 5-1 in front of a record crowd on Monday. Many believed that Dustin Tokarski wouldn’t be able to play well against Sweden after allowing 5 goals against the Russians. He proved them wrong. Tokarski saved his best performance for last as he made 39 saves and allowed only one goal against Sweden as Canada went on to victory. Tokarski’s performance as well as Canada’s pressure on Sweden’s goaltender, Jacob Markstrom, were the difference. Markstrom looked rattled throughout the game as Canada managed to get to his head and knock him off his game. There were several times that Canadian players ran into Markstrom only to infuriate him further. Pat Quinn’s decision to stick with Tokarski in the final game was met with some skepticism following shaky performances against the US and Russia. Tavaras was rewarded with the MVP and top forward for the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championship tournament. He has also made a strong case to be the first draft pick in the upcoming 2009 NHL draft With Canada claiming it’s fifth straight gold medal victory, they have now tied with Russia for the most gold medals won by the Junior team at 15. Canada has proved that they are the dominant country when it comes to playing hockey. PK Subban opened up scoring in the first period after shoveling home a puck that was floating around the crease during a powerplay for Canada. Angelo Esposito scored shortly after making a deke to get out of the corner and flipped a back hand into the far post past Markstrom as the puck bounced into the net to make it 2-0 for Canada. Canada’s third goal of the game came when Cody Hodgson snapped a shot past Markstrom during a powerplay early in the third period. Sweden quickly responded though as Joakim Andersson finally solved Tokarski and roofed a shot to the top right corner of the net after coming around the net. Both Eberly and Hodgson scored empty net goals to make the final score in the game 5-1. Following the game, Canada had the three top tournament point leaders. Hodgson had 16 points, Tavares had 15 points and Eberle had 13 points to end the tournament.
